I spend a lot of time in my indoor kitchen, which translates to really enjoying the wonderful outdoor kitchen that is all around. Links to recipes I like or recipes I’ve created live here.

My most memorable outdoor cooking experience was back in the second week of July this past year. I had decided to take my fifteen-year-old cousin backpacking for the first time, along with my dad, my partner, and my dog. In my mind, this was going to phenomenal and wonderful and life-changing. In practice, this was not the case.

I planned a fairly elaborate sausage, eggs, and pancakes with syrup dinner and began cooking around 6pm. Without warning, the wind kicked up and fifteen minutes later we were hiding inside the tent as hail pelted down and lightning lit up the tiny lake we were camped beside. Being determined to show my cousin how great backpacking was, I set up my pocket rocket outside the tent in the cooking vestibule and set to work cooking eggs. Just as I was finishing them, the wind picked up to 45 mph and threatening to knock my whole operation over. I passed the eggs around, hiding inside the tent and waiting for the wind to die. Ten minutes or so passed and I was able to cook another round of eggs just before another wave of the storm rolled around. This became a sort of strange routine; cooking one serving of the meal and then waiting inside the tent for the storm burst to pass over. Four hours later, everyone had eaten to their satisfaction and this storm was nowhere close to ending. The hail relented around 5am.
